Review - "Spark" by Alicia Michaels

Most nineteen year-old girls are thinking about college, stretching the wings of newfound adulthood, and boys. Well, I’ll probably never go to college and all my dreams of the future are gone. I’ve been adult for much longer than I should have been and my girlhood was stolen the minute the North Koreans dropped their nukes over the United States. As for boys … well, that’s pretty much out of the question now, too. My love life is too messy to even talk about.

I have nothing.

Except, maybe, my cause, my mission, The Resistance. It is the hope I have to cling to, I am counting on it to pave the way to my future. As things heat up and the terrorist sect known as The Rejects make themselves known opponents of society in this war, the choice to be on the side of good is harder than ever. My friends are broken; Olivia is a shell of her former self and Jenica is barely hanging on. Dax and Gage … well, we’re not talking about my love life, remember?
The Rejects, the government, President Drummond; they are pressing in on us from all sides and the weight is tremendous. Still, when given the choice to crumble or stand, I’d rather stand. Times are dark, but we are here, a rebellion, a whisper in the dark, a spark that lights the flames of change.

My Review

I absolutely love the Bionics Series by Alicia Michaels.  Book 4 picks up where Titanium left off.  Blythe is still thinking about Gage and how he lied about who he was.  Blythe is also still trying to figure out her feelings for Dax.  The Resistance has a job to do, go take care of a bunch of Rogue's while trying to show that they are not the bad one's.  Like most missions something goes wrong and well I'll leave it at that LOL

Alicia's writing is amazing and the characters are enjoyable even at their worse moments :)  You will find yourself wanting to fight along side the Resistance to help people see that they are just everyday people like them.

If you enjoyed the first three books, you will NEED to pick this one up today!

 Excerpt:

Nickoli’s arms were laden with weapons when he came back into view. He stepped in, uninvited, and opened his arms; allowing each deadly piece to drop to the ground with an ear-splitting clang. I jumped back as the items ricocheted across the floor, and a club rolled to a stop by my feet.
Nickoli bent over and picked up a sword. He approached me, a menacing look on his face, and a flash of terror tore through me. The temptation to scream was strong, however I knew it wouldn’t do me any good. If his intention was to kill me, the deed would be long done before my cries for help would be answered. If they were ever answered. I kept my focus on the sharp tip of the sword as he advanced on me.
“If you choose not to trust me, you will have to protect yourself.”
He raised the sword, gripped the hilt in his fist, and hurled it into the floor at my feet. The tip embedded into the wood with a thud. I yelped in surprise and jumped back. With an angry glare, he turned to storm out of the room; leaving the pile of weapons scattered about the floor.
“I don’t know how to fight with a sword,” I called out, my voice void of the angry bluster it carried earlier.
He didn’t stop, but instead replied over his shoulder as his long strides carried him out the door. “Then Princess, you best learn how.”

The slam of his door signaled the end to our conversation.

Review - "Everfire" by Alexia Purdy

Magic & Fire burn...

The Serenity of the Land of Faerie is threatened as the Unseelie Queen Aveta rages war against the three remaining Seelie Realms of Faerie. As Shade's powers grow, she finds she is running out of time to keep the war from spilling into the human world. Winter is growing in strength as the evil Queen's horrifying legions scar the land in their frigid wake. No one is safe. Shade becomes enemy number one for the Unseelie legions. Questioning her true role of power, Shade discovers the cost of winning may come at a much higher price than she ever imagined.

My Review:

Where to begin LOL  This book picks up where book 1 ends.  Shade is still being pursued by the Unseeling Queen, she is still battling with her feelings for Dylan and Soap, doesn't know what she has for powers and well the list goes on :)  I truly enjoyed the first book and this one wasn't any different.  The story is well written and there is just so much going on that you are sucked right in and can't put the book down.  I absolutely love Shade and Soap (love that nickname) and then there is the "battles" that take place as Shade still is struggling to find out more about herself.  If you loved Book 1 you will love Book 2

Add this one (as well as book one if you haven't already) to your collection!!

Review - "Evershade" by Alexia Purdy

A dark twist on faeries. For Shade, a chance meeting with a powerful Teleen Faery warrior who wields electrical currents and blue fires along his skin, has her joining him on a treacherous mission for the good Seelie Faerie Court across the land of Faerie. Magic and malice abound and nothing is what it really seems to be.

The evil Unseelie Queen and her treacherous allies are around every corner as Shade makes her way across the breathtaking landscapes of the world of Faerie, which exists alongside the mundane human world. Shade discovers her own uncharted magic and meets some of the most powerful warriors in Faerie while battling evil dryads, conniving Teleen guards and challenges on her life with every step in a world where nothing can be taken for granted.

My Review:

When this book starts out, Alexia meets up with Jack who takes her to the Fairie realm where most this story takes place.  There is so much action that takes place throughout the story.  You have the Unseelie Queen trying to get Alexia, you have Alexia trying to learn the ways of the fae and to find out who she really is.  There is also a love twist to this and what drove me nuts was that you didn't find out till very late in the book who she does love.   I was definitely glad to read book 2 right afterwards.

I truly enjoyed Alexia's take on Fairie and her descriptions of both the characters and the demographics was excellent.  I enjoy authors that can describe characters or surroundings so good that I am pulled into that world and picture it perfectly in my mind while reading

Great job!

My review:

I read all three of these books together and I have to say that they were amazing!! Once I started reading I just couldn't put it down.  The story line is based off of twins Alex and Lexi who are twins that were adopted.  Lexi wants to find out who her birth parents are but Alex doesn't and so she agrees to stop searching...then walks in Cole who will change Lexi & Alex's world.  Helping her learn about her family and where they come from.

I think that the author did a great job at writing the series and described the characters superbly.  I could easily picture them (which I love about books) and was easily enthralled in the story.

Without saying too much about the books and what not, all I can say is if you like Greek Mythology, supernatural and young adult than this book is for you.

2014 TBR Pile Reading Challenge

I tried to do this challenge last year and I only accomplished two books off of my list, well this year I'm going to do much better!!  I have a bookshelf and a kindle full of books to read so this year I am going to do this, I'm cutting back on blog tours and concentrating more on books for me.

This year's challenge is different, they have a list so I'm thinking I'm going to go for "First Kiss"...It's a manageable goal but more would be better :)

1-10 - A Firm Handshake
11-20 - A Friendly Hug
21-30 - First Kiss
31-40 - Sweet Summer Fling
41-50 - Could this be love?
50+ - Married With Children

Review - "Child of the Sacred Earth" by Alicia Michaels

Get a degree, get a job, save adorable foster siblings from the clutches of the evil foster mom …
These are Jocylene Sanders’ top priorities as she enters her sophomore year of college. The last thing she expects is to find herself the champion of an entire kingdom. However, that is just what happens when the mysterious Faerie, Rothatin Longspear, appears to her, tasking her with saving a parallel world full of creatures from her wildest dreams.

Jocylene journeys with him into the world of Fallada, hoping for answers about her birth parents and background. What she finds is a mystifying past, and an even more uncertain future, as her heart becomes entangled with the stoic, battle-hardened Rothatin, as well as Eli, the untroubled Panther Shifter with no loyalties and no home. With her heart and soul pulled in so many directions, can Jocylene find the strength needed to become the savior one nation so desperately needs?

My review:

I am a huge fan of supernatural/paranormal/fairy tales, you name it.  This series has to be one of my all time favorites.  It's a great take on the middvil times (or so it seems), with a mix of mythical add to it....you have fairies, girls with powers, elves, seers, witches and well the list goes on.

I love how each book is about a different girl and her tale on finding out who & what she truly is.  Each girl is important to the grand scheme of things but must overcome obstacles to accomplish what they are setting out to do.

Alicia does a great job of describing the characters, the demographics and the events that take place.  She is a great story teller which makes it easy for the reader to get sucked into the world of Fallada.

If you like Lord of the Rings, Hobbit and Narnia than you will love these books.   You will not be disappointed!!

Genre: Contemporary Fiction
Publication Date: February 15, 2014

Karen Barnes’s life is simple, just the way she likes it, surrounded by horses and the mountains of Laramie, Wyoming. She is well aware the longing for adventure can lead to blood and death, a hard lesson taught during her one, and only, tour in Iraq almost a decade ago.

A stranger approaches Karen about boarding a famous horse foaled in her stables, making her instincts go on high alert. She knows for a fact the stallion’s owner would never sell Five Alarm, the US Reining champion worth a hefty ten million dollars. In ten minutes the stranger confirms her worst fears, launching her into weeks of torment at the hands of her kidnappers.

Armed with a spine of steel, she steals a truck and trailer, rescuing another victim, and recovering Five Alarm, but the ordeal is far from over. The kidnapping was a cover up for espionage. Trusted contacts join the fray, and in the end, pay for their loyalty by dying for her safety. Others aren’t so trustworthy, and as the truth is brought to light, she is betrayed yet again.

Safety and freedom come with their own emotional shackles. She had the courage to fight the battle, but can she live with the aftermath of the carnage, or survive the fractures to her mind?

Born in Anchorage, I've lived ... well ... everywhere. From the Arctic Circle to a block from the beaches in Florida. I speak fluent Arkansas Hillbilly, make a mean gumbo, can sew when necessary and am a whiz at packing.

You'll generally find a Muse snuggled to my hip, the other one laying across my shoulders and Editor Kitty staring at the screen, waiting for the red ink to make an appearance. Once it does, he lays across the keyboard purring.

The family brags about the latest compromising position I've been found in, trying to figure out how to truly describe "legs all akimbo" or if falling on the couch could truly land a body in a certain position. They ignore my yelling at characters on the computer screen, and are forgiving when I accidentally write past the time for them to eat. It's one way of teaching the teenager to cook ...

Stockholm Syndrome. Two words I hated, loathed and wanted erased. But here I sat, the therapist repeating the words over and over, telling me I had to understand their meaning in order to move forward. Stockholm Syndrome, the two words would explain everything, help me on the road to recovery.

Memories refused to hide, surfacing and causing physical reactions I wasn’t going to tell the court ordered therapist. She wouldn’t understand, and it sure wasn’t going to help.

I had to pretend, to nod and try to listen. The situation was my fault in many respects, and she could blame Stockholm all she wanted.

Fuck them. It had nothing to do with Stockholm, but everything to do with the violent, sadistic, serial killer currently sitting in prison, the new and still bright pink scars dissecting my face and trickling down my back, and a horse worth ten million dollars.

I took two steps forward, but stopped when the little bastard appeared. He wore new jeans and an unripped t-shirt with “No Fat Chicks” emblazoned across the chest. He walked into the bedroom, closing the door and locking it. He put the key into the front pocket of his Wranglers.

“I’ve been given permission. I promise not to break anything,” he grinned, and stalked me around the room.

I stopped in the middle of the room. We’d made two full circuits, but if it was one thing a person learned when training horses, it was that whoever made the feet move was the boss.

He smiled and pushed into my personal space. I wanted to move backwards, to get away from him. Whatever happened next was going to hurt, one way or another. He stood so close a deep breath would make us touch. He looked down, and for the first time, I was distinctly aware I wore no bra. I wasn’t big enough to really need one, but in this moment, the more clothing the better.

“Ah, found your spine. The more you struggle, the better it is for me.” Lightning fast, his hand was around my throat and squeezing.

I couldn’t stop my reaction. My knee rose, but he moved and I only managed to hit the meatiest part of his inner thigh. Hearing his laugh made me sweat. His fingers tightened, and I fought to breathe.

“I can smell your fear.”

Time had no meaning in those moments. My beautiful colt was hurt, inside and out, unsure of everyone and everything. He only had me, the one person he knew from the moment of his birth. And I was almost too damaged to be of any help. I let the tears fall unheeded.

I lightly ran my hand over his once powerful neck. I noticed he’d lost a few hundred pounds. Normally in the eleven hundred pound range, I guessed him at eight hundred now. Muscle was gone, leaving only a broken horse standing next to a fractured woman.

stared at the cell phone, not really seeing it. More men, or women, tomorrow, in the room, or surrounding it, anyway. More people to deal with, more worries someone would betray me.

I could feel the panic clawing its way to the top, surrounding my heart, restricting my breathing. I closed my eyes, trying to visualize Laramie in the winter, silent and beautiful, with the full moon sliding across newly fallen snow, creating dark sparkles in the night. The coyotes trying to survive, the hawks swooping silently in the air hunting, life moving forward, step by step, with or without me. One day, I would choose to join them. One day I would be strong enough to live again. I hoped.
