Review - "Dark Spell" by Gill Arbuthnott

Fifteen-year-year-old Callie Hall has just found out that she is a witch...and things keep going wrong. Sometimes her mind seems to make things happen, things she cannot control. She can set fire to things without a match, and when she’s angry people can get hurt.
Her friend Josh understands that she’s a bit strange, but it is only on a dark and dangerous visit to the tunnels beneath the ruins of St Andrews’ castle that he realizes just how strange she really is. Something comes back with Callie—in Callie—something she cannot escape.
Can Callie control her power long enough to send back the darkness before it takes over her life? Will Josh ever understand her secret?

My Review:

Callie has found out she’s a witch and now needs to be trained by her grandmother and her friends.  However after a trip down into the tunnels, things are weird for her…she starts having nightmares and seeing a shadow figure in her room.  Callie struggles to tell her friend Josh as she’s afraid he’d want nothing to do with her but she needs his help to defeat the evil that has left the tunnels with her and she only hopes she doesn’t lose him because of her Witchness (not a word but it works LOL).

Callie must learn to accept who she truly is and to believe in herself in order to protect those whom she loves and herself.

That is Dark Spell in a nutshell.  I liked the story but at times I felt it was slow and found myself taking longer breaks in the reading than I normally do but I did feel that the author wrote a well written story about Callie. I liked the characters and the uniqueness that each one brought to the book….absolutely loved Bessie, she seems like a hoot to be around.  A great book but not one that I myself would read more than once.
