Review - "Amethyst" by Heather Bowhay

Publication Date: October 13, 2012
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal, Fantasy, Supernatural, Romance

College-bound Lexi Adams leads no ordinary life. Premonitions dictate her every move compelling her to rescue strangers day and night. After years of self-sacrifice, she decides to ignore one, but innocent people die. So, when the next premonition depicts her own death, Lexi has a decision to make.

Except more complications arise when a series of strange illnesses and murders devastate her small town, and co-worker Jessica Nelson insists Lexi can help. According to Jessica, everyone is born with an inner energy called Essence. Only a select few, Amethysts, can control Essence and heal people. Jessica claims to be an Amethyst and asks Lexi to join her and a group of her friends as they track the murderers.

Lexi considers helping them only to find out that not only do Jessica's friends have a hidden agenda, but they also harbor extraordinary abilities. Even more unsettling, they have connections with the Ray-pacs – the sadistic killers who are preying on human Essence. Ultimately, Lexi must decide if life, not death, equals salvation. And if so, is she willing to make sacrifices and join her friends in eradicating the Ray-pacs?

Tanya's Review:

Lexi doesn’t lead a normal life, she gets premonitions of events and she feels she must do whatever she can to rescue the people she sees in them.  After years of saving people, she ignores one and she then “witnesses” her own death in one.

Things aren’t weird enough, Lexi learns from Jessica that she may be an Amethyst, someone who can control Essence (an inner energy) and heal people; she asks Lexi to join her and her friends to help heal people that are starting to turn up at hospitals with mysterious illnesses.

This is when she learns that the friends of Jessica’s are different, they all have special powers and are actually Guardians; individuals protecting the Amethyst amongst other things.  Lexi’s life is forever changed from what she knew it as.

I have had this book downloaded for awhile now and then I saw that the author was looking for reviews so I knew it was time to “dust it off” and finally read it. The story line of Amethyst was interesting, a girl who can see what’s going to happen and makes it a priority to save these individuals.   For many years Lexi's priority was that, have a premonition and find the indivudals and save them from their fate.  Then to top it off you have individuals that have special powers other than healing and are out there to protect these people known as “Amethyst” and many others.  I didn’t find myself drawn to Lexi or any of the other characters however I did find myself drawn to the story itself.  I wanted to know who the Gaurdians and Amethysts where, why were these people becoming mysteriously ill and will Lexi’s premoniation about her death come true or not.  Then you have Jason, a Gaurdian who Lexi is drawn too however  is unsure how Jason feels for her as he seems to have something to do or avoids contact with her….talk about hurting a girls self-esteem.   All in all, a good read and I will be reading the next book in the series to learn more about Lexi and what will become of the story
